Self‑Guided Tour of Kapuskasing and Hearst Region

Self-Guided Tour of Kapuskasing and Hearst Region

Sawmills and timber harvesting were an integral part of the settlement of the province. Pulp and paper mills were soon established, leading to the birth of many towns in Northeastern Ontario.  This tour examines some of the phenomena that shaped the early economy of the communities of Hearst and Kapuskasing and subsequently allowed the lumber industry to gradually carve out a niche.

In Hearst, the percentage of Francophones is higher than anywhere else in Ontario. For this city of about 5,000 inhabitants, 9 out of 10 people are French-speaking. In Kapuskasing, a town of 8,000 inhabitants, 70% of the population is French-speaking.
