Voices from Another Time | The Pleasant View Cemetery
Presented by
Ville de Coaticook

Pleasant View Cemetery is a great viewpoint for admiring the surrounding landscapes! It is located in the heart of Barnston’s rich farmland, in the village long ago known as Barnston Corner.

The village grew at the junction of the area’s first roads, cleared by American pioneers in the early 1800s. Before the arrival of the train in Coaticook in 1853, Barnston Corner was the business centre of this township.

The cemetery is a poignant vestige of this era. Along with a broad range of burial markers, you’ll see the gravestones from the former Parker Cemetery. The monument for young John Parker is dated 1803 and is considered the oldest in the entire Coaticook region.

A guide will accompany you throughout your visit, and two ghosts from the grave will tell their tales from another time: freemason Epaphras Buckland, grandson of a pioneer, and Elizabeth Wheeler, wife of general storekeeper Cassius Remick.

Together with its photographs and archival documents, this audioguide will help make your visit of the Pleasant View Cemetery a memorable one. Be sure to travel to the cemetery itself: onsite, you will fully appreciate the beauty and the spirit of the place!
