The Doak Monument is one of the last vestiges of the hamlet of Hillhurst. The hamlet was established in the 19th century.

Mr. Cochrane’s pedigree cattle had a world-wide reputation. Cattle traders would come to attend his auctions from as far away as the UK and the USA.
Hillhurst had a post office and a church large enough to house 200 worshippers.
