Sainte-Amélie neighbourhood

Inspired by the american vernacular style

At the time of the founding of the city of Baie-Comeau, the current location of the historic district of St. Amelie was a huge construction site. Champlain avenue was where the first houses of bosses and employees of the papier mill were built in 1937. Some residences have kept the appearance they had in 1937-1938 and are still in very good condition.

The houses in the neighbourhood were inspired by the american vernacular style of the late 1930's.

It is in this district that the Honourable Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada, spent his childhood, specifically at 99 Champlain Avenue.
