Champlain beach

Champlain beach

In the 1940s, the citizens of Baie-Comeau had access, by Champlain Avenue, to a path leading to the beach of the same name, to an outdoor public pool and a wading pool. Courtesy of the compagny, for the amusement of families, the pools were popular amongst young and old.

During the first year, the pool was filled with seawater and later by a nearby fresh water source: the water that came to the pools was neither filtered nor heated, it was brown and very cold.

The installations disappeared in the 1960s with the founding of a new parish. The municipality of Baie-Comeau built a pool with all the modern amenities of the time.

Today, nature has taken back its place, the trail still exists and Champlain beach is visited by many, especially on hot summer days where the locals enjoy the warming, altough temporary, of the River's water.

At low tide, walkers, runners, photographers and yogis, to mention only these, can go to the "sand bar" and enjoy the nartural beauty of the landscape, close to the city.
