The Park of Sainte-Amélie grotto

The Park of Sainte-Amélie grotto

The park of Sainte-Amélie grotto was set up in 1947 in honor of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Cross Sisters. The site received the blessing of Archbishop Napoléon-Alexandre Labrie on the 29th of May 1950.

It is to Sister of St. John Apostle that we owe the realization of the park. Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, and daughter of an American father and a Québécoise mother, she was graduate of the School of Fine Arts of Montreal. At her death in 1999, she left behind a project honouring her religious order, but also many students from the region, to whom she had shared her passion for the arts with.

The Park of Sainte-Amélie grotto

The convent of the Holy Cross sisters was located on the site of the parc but the obsolete building was demolished.

True testimony of the past, we can see a mural in the park of the classroom of the honourable Brian Mulroney, a native of Baie-Comeau and Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993.

Located in the center of the historic district, the religious park is restored and maintained by volunteers. It offers calm and beauty of the scenery of the bay and river for prayer and contemplation.
