Place des Arts

Preserving French Language and Culture

Place des Arts is a project - to be inaugurated within a year - that represents a victory of spirit, perseverance and heart for local cultural organizations and all those who have worked hard to preserve the Francophone language and culture of Northern Ontario.

A multi-disciplinary center

This initiative will lead to the upcoming official launch of the first multidisciplinary arts center in Northeastern Ontario.

Place des Arts plans to present 850 cultural activities annually. It expects to attract approximately 50,000 visitors annually to downtown Sudbury.

For the Francophone population of Northern Ontario, Place des Arts is a much-anticipated gathering place to share stories and celebrate a rich cultural tradition through theater, music, visual arts, dance, folklore, spoken word and book launches.

About ROCS and Place des arts

The project to establish Greater Sudbury Arts Place was an initiative of the ROCS. It is the result of the États généraux de la Francophonie de Sudbury, the first minority community in Canada to undertake a joint project of this magnitude.

The main members of the ROCS are: the Carrefour francophone; the Centre franco-ontarien de folklore; the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario; Concerts La Nuit sur l'étang; the Éditions Prise de parole; the Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario and the Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury.

Project Initiators

Since its inception in 2007, the Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury (ROCS) has been working to develop the Arts Place project as a direct result of the PlanifSudbury initiative.

The Regroupement des organismes culturels du Grand Sudbury (ROCS) brings together the seven professional francophone arts, culture and heritage organizations in Greater Sudbury.
