Stained Glass Windows

To honor past members of the Congregation and Clergy

For the first 50 or so years, they were clear glass. Since the 1860s, beautiful stained glass windows have been gradually added to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity to honor past members of the congregation and clergy. These windows aren’t just decorative — they tell stories, commemorate lives, and fill the space with vibrant color. Each window illustrates a biblical scene with remarkable detail and artistry.

We’ve included further details about a few of the memorial windows we think are quite interesting and inspiring…

Beloved of God - David's Window

This window is dedicated to Trevor Amherst Hale, who died at 19. His parents dedicated this window to him and chose the scripture: “He pleased God and was beloved of Him.” (Song of Sol 4:10). Trevor’s parents chosen scripture is a testament to their love for their son. This window depicts the good shepherd and the story of David's anointing as king of Israel by the prophet Samuel. The window speaks to our interconnectedness and longing to connect with nature, others and God.

This window show the biblical scenes of the Baptism of Christ, the Ascension, and the Transfiguration. The four evangelists are represented by their tetramorphs.

The Crucifixion

To get to this window, go behind the pulpit it is located to your right

This window, based on the scripture, “The Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:20) depicts the crucifixion, the central mystery of Christian faith. It symbolizes Christ's ultimate sacrifice, expressing divine love and solidarity with humanity through suffering and death. There are profound implications of a God who chooses mortality, as well as the love exemplified by Mary, Jesus' mother, and the compassionate words of Jesus to the bandits crucified alongside him. This window was made in memory of the Honorable Evan John Price D.C.L.. It is a powerful reminder of God's love and presence, even in the face of death.

Young Jesus in the temple

You can find this window on the left side of the cathedral by the King’s Gift.

The window was dedicated to Charles Smith Parke MD and Louisa Scott by their children. The stained glass memorializes the story of Mary and Joseph's frantic search for Jesus, who they find impressing scholars with his wisdom. It reflects the theme that parents often don't fully understand their children's world but love them, nonetheless. The scripture depicted highlights the importance of understanding faith like a child and the significance of the temple as a spiritual home.

The Annonciation

This window is directly to the right as you enter the Cathedral.

It portrays the Annunciation, a frequently depicted subject in Christian art. There were many interpretations by artists from the 12th century to Leonardo da Vinci and the 19th-century Romantics. William Frost Wood had this window made in memory of his parents Robert Wood and Charlotte Gray. The window includes symbols like the lily, representing Christ, and an oil lamp, signifying patience and inspiration. The Annunciation is the story of when the angel Gabriel surprises Mary, a humble girl from Nazareth, with the news that she will bear Jesus. This divine encounter, marked by wonder and awe, reflects the biblical theme of God appearing in unexpected places to unlikely people. Mary responds with the Magnificat, celebrating God's greatness and mercy.

Made in 1906.
