Pointe des Châteaux

An idyllic natural place for the eyes

La Pointe des Châteaux is a peninsula located at the eastern tip of the island of Grande-Terre in Guadeloupe.

If the weather permits, from the summit, you can see the island of La Désirade, which rises just 8 km offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. Near the Pointe des Châteaux is also the long and dangerous 'Grandes Salines' beach.

ADVICE

This is one of the most touristy natural sites on the island, due to its proximity to Saint-François. It is recommended to arrive early or late in the day, around sunrise or sunset, to avoid crowds, find parking more easily, and better appreciate the magnificent panoramas around you.

History

The history of Pointe des Châteaux begins with the first human development when Arawak tribes settled there in the year 300 AD. They remained for nearly 11 centuries, until 1400, based on the remains found in the region.

The place does not have any castles worthy of the name. The origin of the name comes from the establishment of the Capuchin religious community, which in 1683 created a parish named the Parish of the Castles.

A trail leads to the 'Grand Cross,' located at the summit of Pointe des Châteaux. From there, a magnificent panorama awaits you.
