In the Antilles, the term 'Habitation' refers to the agricultural estate where slavery was once practiced. Habitation Zévallos allows visitors to trace the history of the European settler families who lived there and discover part of the history of slavery.
The Zevallos estate takes its name from a fruitful marriage between two landowners: Philippe Dominique de Parisis de Zevallos and Renée-Adélaïde Van Shalchwick (a descendant of Dutch refugees). Over the years, the estate expanded to cover more than 1000 hectares by 1802.
First Central Factory in Guadeloupe
The first central factory in Guadeloupe was built in 1844 on the lands of Zevallos, not far from the house you can see. The remnants you will see on site are now the last traces of this industrial era, both pre and post-slavery.
Visits to the site are possible. Discover the house and the Masters' Garden, where you will learn about daily life in the 18th-19th century. You can also see the remains of the first central factory in Guadeloupe.
