15 Fisher Road

An Invitation to Meditation

Audio transcript

We are now near 15 Fisher Road. Fisher Road is of one of the municipality’s heritage roads. In the 1920s, lawyer Roswell Eric Fisher settled permanently on the farm he had acquired. The property included a round barn built in 1907, now designated a heritage structure but no longer accessible to the public. The original family home and surrounding buildings were lost to fire and storm damage, leaving no visible traces.

From here, enjoy views of Mount Peeve, Mount Elephant, and Mount Owl’s Head. The open, mowed fields—once pastures—create a clear space between the road and forest, with Scott Brook subtly marked by a strip of dense vegetation where nature reasserts its dominance over the human efforts to shape the land, not so long ago. It is mowing that maintains this cultural or humanized landscapes.

This roads invites introspection, perhaps because it leads to the historic Abbey of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac. The first buildings were constructed and blessed in July 1941, based on plans by renowned architect Dom Paul Bellot. The church and its distinctive bell tower, added between 1990 and 1994, were designed by famous architect Dan Anganu.

To the south, the Abbey’s towering spire comes into view. On your return, look for the steeple of the former St. Austin’s Church, now deconsecrated and repurposed as Carrefour Austin—a cultural and community hub.

Expect to encounter walkers, pilgrims, and Benedictine monks, either in quiet contemplation or lively conversation.

For further exploration, consider the Circuit de l’Abbaye, a 149 km loop through seven municipalities. Also available on the BaladoDécouverte platform, this route offers a pilgrimage-style experience through stunning landscapes and rich history.
