Shuttleworth Road

Audio transcript

The place where we are offers a spectacular yet little-known view of the region: Shuttleworth Road is one of the most picturesque roads in Austin. It’s a thoroughfare that invites leisurely strolls, characterized by its cultural and natural elements.

The striking landscape before your eyes is enriched by one of the few remaining active farms in the area. This vantage point provides a synthesis of the municipality's distinctive attractions.

Close to you, there once stood a rural school. Previously located a bit further away, it was moved near our current location around 1939. The relocation, using wooden logs to roll the building, reportedly took no less than three days! The school was later transformed into a private residence before being demolished.

Take the time to sit on the bench and enjoy the breathtaking view…

To the south, you can see the peaks of the northern Green Mountains, including the summit of Owl’s Head Mountain. To the west, a breathtaking panoramic view perfectly illustrates the region's identity, combining agricultural plains, forests, mountains, and magnificent landscapes.

A feeling of tranquility envelops us as we discover this still little-visited place. You will now take this identity-rich path leading to tree tunnels, cultivated fields, vineyards, and framed by remarkable trees.

Sylvia Hopps, a lifelong resident of Austin, recounts that when she arrived here in 1934, the roads had no names! People used known geographical landmarks to find their way. It was at the instigation of her husband, Lawson, a former Austin city councilor, that the roads were named after the first families to settle there. As you might have guessed, the road we are on is named after the Shuttleworth family, one of the first families to settle in the area.
