Anderson & Co. Store

Among the first flour and grain merchants in Otago

The former Anderson and Co. flour and grain merchants' store, built between 1875 and 1881, is closely linked to the significant grain and flour milling industry in the North Otago region. James Anderson and Andrew Mowat are among the pioneers of this industry.

Starting in 1867

They established a flour mill at Manor Place in Dunedin in 1867, then a steam mill at Waikouaiti in 1871, as well as another at Teanaraki, near Enfield. The flour produced at the Kakanui mill is then transported to their store in Oamaru, located on Tyne Street.

Between 1875 and 1876, Anderson and Mowat had a new store built on Harbour Street. They first erected the building at the back of the lot, intending to later add a "beautiful building" facing the street. The store, constructed from concrete, can hold up to 40,000 bushels of grain. It was designed by architect John Lemon and executed by contractor F. Every.
