Guesthouse

1, avenue Carter

Built in 1926 and modified in 1930, this Neoclassical and Adams-style house is a striking feature of the Rouyn-Noranda landscape. Its gabled pediment is a Neoclassical characteristic, while its façade, featuring irregularly spaced windows and an imposing main door, is more reminiscent of the Adams style. The building is rectangular, with the gable end facing the street.

Several events have been held here. Guests such as Gilbert Bécaud and Muhammad Ali have been welcomed here. Currently, the Guest House serves as a visitor centre for those wishing to tour the Horne Smelter.

Historical Significance

Its significance stems first from its age, and then from its history. This residence is the oldest in the neighbourhood. Originally used to house the mine’s manager, it changed its purpose following the 1930 renovations and became a guest house for the Noranda Company.

The facade facing the street

The street-facing façade is surmounted by a wide gable that spans the entire length of the main wing. The baywindow, the projecting sections with windows, was added in 1930, as were the brickwork and the shutters. A substantial addition on the left was also built to horse the staff, as well as two additional bedrooms upstairs.

Noticeable work

In this photo from 1926, you can see how the house has changed following the renovations in 1930. From a home without any particular style, it has been transformed into a residence whose craftsmanship and finish inspires confidence, stability, and opulence.
