School of Arts and Crafts

79, rue Monsieur-Rhéaume Ouest

Built in 1938, this building is a superb example of Art Deco style. Note its streamlined appearance, created by the alternation of rectangular and rounded shapes, which firmly places the building within the modern movement. Also note the touch of refinement of this architectural style.

Historical Significance

The building's recent renovation was carried out with respect for its original style, which adds to its architectural value. This building has significant historical value and is also one of the remnants of the city's educational history. Initially used for the primary education of girls, provided by the Grey Nuns, it welcomed its first cohort of students enrolled in vocational courses in 1942. Following the reform of the school system, academic activities ceased at the end of the 1970s. The building was converted into apartments in 1983.

The Corniche

Although barely visible on most of the building, the chrome-plated, raised cornice becomes a decorative and quintessential Art Deco feature above the main entrance. Note how blends seamlessly into the flat roof's overall form.

Abundant glass blocks!

At the time of its construction, this building had many more glass blocks than it does today. Note the addition of balconies and the relocation of certain windows. Fortunately, these changes were carried out with respect for the building's original character, which still retains its distinctive charm.
