"One man's trash is another man's treasure" by Bordallo II

The Cultural Trail has been hosting the international Portuguese artist since 2018.

The Trash Animals are a series of artworks created by the Portuguese artist Bordalo II that draw attention to the issues of a consumerist and polluting society. His concept involves representing nature—here, animals—using the very materials that contribute to its destruction.

These works are made from end-of-life materials collected from industrial wastelands, abandoned factories, or recycling companies. Paradoxical, isn't it, to realize that this majestic piece of art was created from our own waste?

About the Artist

Born in Lisbon in 1987, Bordalo II is an internationally renowned Portuguese artist. His artist name pays homage to his grandfather, the painter Real Bordalo, while asserting a contemporary reinterpretation of this heritage.

Known for his monumental sculptures made from reclaimed materials, he transforms waste into striking works that raise awareness about the issues of overconsumption, waste production, and environmental protection.

Through his creations installed in public spaces around the world, Bordalo II invites the public to reflect on the impact of our consumption habits and the relationship between humans and their environment.
