Boombox by José Guénette

A return to the 80s-90s

Inspired by the iconic stereo systems of the 1980s and 1990s, Boombox by José Guenette is a monumental sculpture that transforms an everyday object into a work of art.

Witnesses of an Era

These devices have now become iconic objects that evoke nostalgia, collective memory, and our relationship with consumption. The work invites visitors to reflect on how certain objects endure over time and acquire new value, both cultural and emotional.

A Work to Listen To

The installation is also interactive. As visitors approach, they discover musical excerpts inspired by the 80s and 90s, punctuated by the characteristic sounds of a radio searching for a frequency or a cassette being fast-forwarded and rewound. This soundscape, created in collaboration with Paraphonique, extends the experience by awakening memories and inviting each person to take a journey through time.

Back on the Cultural Trail

A well-known figure in the cultural scene, José Guénette continues his dialogue with downtown Gatineau. Following the mural Trace, the Popsicles series in 2024, and the mural Invisible on Eddy Street, he returns this year with a new work that once again invites the public to interact with their environment.
