Asbestos is the capital of asbestos. You mostly know this town for its open-pit mines. Backed by the Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos can boast about still having the largest open-air deposit in the world.

The asbestos was discovered by 1879, and extraction by William H. Jeffrey began in 1881. Asbestos truly earned its stripes, growing from a simple post office to a mining camp and from a village to a town. The name '' Asbestos'', dating back to 1884, comes from an English word derived from the Greek name for incombustible.
