The Castle

Europe’s Biggest Fortress

The construction of Fougères castle started about 1000 years ago. The fortress covers a 2-hectare area and counts 13 towers. It is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Built on an immense rock in the middle of a swamp, the castle is surrounded on both sides by the Le Nançon river, making it a naturally protected strategic site.
