Saint‑Adolphe‑d’Howard Heritage Circuit

Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard Heritage Circuit

Explore our heritage circuit along du Village Street to admire the colonial homes, heritage buildings and sites that have shaped our history.

DIFFICULT PAST - DYNAMIC PRESENT

Founded in1883, Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard began as a Catholic mission, became a village and grew into a municipality. Unique in Quebec, the vast region houses 85 lakes, mountains and forests, with du Village Street as its heart. The town hall, a church, a post office, stores, an art gallery, cafés and heritage homes line this northbound street that connects to secondary roads les Montées and the Tour du lac.
Despite rugged mountains, a harsh climate and infertile soil, hardy pioneers endeavoured to clear and settle on this land. Lots were granted as of 1875.

What is behind the name of Saint-Adolphe d’Howard? “Adolphe” was the first name of Curé Jodoin, founder of the area’s first Catholic mission from which sprang the settlement. “Howard” is in honour of Sir Frederick Howard, Commissioner of the British Colonies in North America sent from England in 1778 to visit the colonies and found “Howard Township”, a Crown territory.

Today, our municipality is home to 3,663 permanent residents and approximately 8,000 tourists who come to enjoy the natural beauty of our surroundings.

Nature and Culture Await!
