What can a minority language community do to build relationships and create language security? With more than 30 Francophone associations and businesses under its roof, the Cité francophone in Bonnie Doon is a dream come true.
A project dreamed up in the 1940s by the Association canadienne-française de l'Alberta (ACFA), its first phase was only completed in 1997. Its construction, inspired by Greek amphitheaters but also by the fortified walls of Quebec City, benefited from the addition of phase 2 in 2010, offering even more space to essential francophone organizations and businesses.
Year-round, music can be heard from the patio of Café Bicyclette, whose cuisine is inspired by the most delicious French and Canadian specialties. In winter, the Café's huge patio offers wood stoves and blankets for an unparalleled winter experience. The Théâtre de la Cité hosts cultural events specific to the Francophone community but is also available for rental.
The Flying Canoe Festival takes place in nearby Mill Creek Ravine. With neighbouring Campus Saint-Jean, with its research facilities and residences, the religious community of Saint-Thomas d'Aquin, a French retirement residence, as well as the Maurice-Lavallée school, La Cité sits at the heart of Edmonton's French Quarter.
