Text version of the audio

The Galerie Jean-Claude Bergeron is an important step in your discovery of Ottawa.

This gallery is in a Victorian house that is a typical example of 19th-century architecture, the Rochon House. This building belonged to one of the principal cabinetmakers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa. It is an Ontario Heritage Site.

Jean-Claude Bergeron, the owner of this gallery is himself a professional artist engraver, with particular expertise in etching and silkscreening. He is one of the first graduates in Visual Arts from the University of Ottawa (1971).

Galerie Jean-Claude Bergeron has been in existence for 30 years. Its artists are Canadian and international professionals, many of whom are from the Ottawa region of Ontario and Quebec or have come from elsewhere to settle in the region.

Among the local artists who exhibit or have exhibited at the gallery over the years are: Henri Masson (the first artist to exhibit in 1992), Michel Savage, Michel V. Cheff, Pierre Huot, Adrien Asselin, Michel Martineau, Marc Séguin, Denise Lévesque, Jeanne Vaillancourt, Colette Gréco-Riddle, Miguel Berlanga, Suzanne Joubert, Dominik Sokolowski, Éliane Saheurs, Henriette Éthier and Lise Goulet among others. Some of these artists are internationally recognized.

The gallery also presents works by artists who have marked the history of art. During your visit, you may have the opportunity to see works by Miró, Picasso, Tàpies, Clavé, Alechinsky, Delaunay, Riopelle, Pellan, Matta, and other great masters.

You will have a good overview of a part of the Francophone artistic culture of the Ottawa region and an opening to many of the great international artists who have left their mark on our collective visual unconscious.
