The King’s Gift is a remarkable collection of gifts presented by King George III that honors the significance of this Cathedral as the first Anglican cathedral outside the British Isles. King George III sought to offer a gift of equal prestige to the gifts given by the French king to the nearby Roman Catholic Cathedral.
Despite the king’s declining health later in life, he remained a passionate patron of the arts. To match the grandeur of gifts given by the French king, George III commissioned a silver communion set from his royal goldsmiths, Rundle and Bridge of London. Each piece bears the coat of arms of the Diocese of Quebec, the king’s own arms, and the letters IHS—representing Jesus in Latin.
The collection includes chalices, patens, flagons, candlesticks, and an alms dish, alongside a Book of Common Prayer, each item reflecting the king’s generosity and devotion.
