The land in front of Youville Hospital used to be a huge park where children from the twin towns would play. In the late 1960s, construction began on the new hospital to meet the ever-growing needs of the population.
This photo, taken in the mid-1920s, shows the Saints-Anges hospital, the city's very first. It was located on the shores of Lake Osisko on Perreault Street East. The building has since been moved across the street, and although it has been greatly transformed, it still exists.
Although far from the urban core, rural areas also had access to health care. Here, caretaker Valentine Lupien poses in front of her Destor dispensary. Interestingly, the air ambulance that flew patients between the region and major centers was named in her honor.
