The mine and smelter at the birth of the town

Shaft headframe at Noranda's Horne mine

Photograph taken around 1926 of one of the two underground exploration shafts built by Noranda in 1925.

With pick and shovel!

Three labourers, circa 1926-1927, digging a trench by the sweat of their brow. In the background, the smelting plant under construction.

Three chimneys

One of the few shots of Noranda showing three chimneys rather than one, the old one having been replaced by the new one and then deconstructed.

Under construction

Same shot, but slightly different. In this photo taken in the late 1940s, note the base of the new chimney, then under construction!

In the bowels

Interior view of the Noranda mine in the 1960s-1970s.
