The fascinating history of Southwestern Ontario

Text version of audio

Are you interested in immersing yourself in the history and heritage of the City of Windsor and area? Come check out the Chimczuk Museum, the primary site of Museum Windsor.

This premier museum destination features permanent exhibitions outlining the fascinating story of this part of southwestern Ontario.

This journey begins with the geologic gallery, which brings the visitor to the deep past when we were covered by a warm inland sea inhabited by ancient fish, including the ten-metre-long Dunkleosteus, and continues through the period of the last ice age during which giant beavers and mastodons roamed this land.

This path through the past then introduces the Indigenous Peoples who are still here to this day.  European arrival, the fur trade, the development of the Canada-US border, the forming of the town and then the development of the City of Windsor, the Underground Railroad, the prohibition era are also detailed, highlighted with original artifacts and hands-on elements.

The Original People’s Culture and Legacy gallery features the heritage and art of local Indigenous Peoples.

The Chimczuk Museum also offers a state-of-the-art Children’s Gallery and Learning Space with opportunities for hands-on exploration for our young and young at heart, two galleries for travelling and temporary exhibitions, and a Museum Gift Shop with fantastic souvenirs for guests of all ages.

The Chimczuk Museum also shares the building at 401 Riverside Drive W. with Art Windsor-Essex.
