Thousand Island Playhouse

Canada's most charming theatre

Text version

The Thousand Islands Playhouse has been called 'Canada's most charming theatre' (CBC Radio) in a 'breathtaking location' (Toronto Star). Known as Canada's Dockside Theatre, it has been presenting shows in the heart of the Thousand Islands for over 35 years. If you step inside, you're in for a special experience... that’s right, you're practically in the water!

In 1982, a group of young actors decided to buy the former Gananoque Canoe Club with the idea of turning it into a summer theatre. Today, the Springer Theatre allows audiences to sit comfortably on the docks and enjoy the waterfront during the intermission, all in a most convivial atmosphere at nightfall.

In 2004, the company added the Firehall Theatre, transforming a former fire station and police station into a vibrant contemporary venue. The Firehall offers a unique theatrical setting: a black box with no permanent seating or stage. This flexibility makes it possible to stage more modern, adaptable and original shows.

Employing over 150 artistic workers and welcoming over 40,000 spectators each year, the Playhouse is well known on the national theatre scene and considered one of the top five summer theatre festivals in the province. Look at the program when you visit the Thousand Islands, you can expect to meet some great artists, from comedy to drama to music, and you're sure to have a great summer evening!

The Playhouse is located on Gananoque's waterfront at 185 South Street.
