The Thousand Islands History Museum

10,000 years of history

Text version

Discover 10,000 years of Thousand Islands history in this small family museum located on the St. Lawrence River waterfront... from the outside, this heritage home offers a glimpse into Gananoque's rich cultural history.

From the days of glaciers and maskinonge to pirates, liquor smugglers and River Rats, discover the history of the First Nations who roamed these lands, from the first French and British explorers to the present-day personalities who bring Gananoque to life today.

Founded in 1995, the museum offers interactive exhibits and a permanent exhibition featuring elements of geology, ecology, First Peoples, the arrival of Europeans, the region's involvement in the War of 1812 and Gananoque's industrial era. A great way to discover all the region's history in one place!

Be sure to leave yourself some time to relax on the waterside veranda...

The museum is located at 125 Water Street in the Arthur J.E. Child building and is open Tuesday to Sunday, with the option of a guided tour in French. Alternatively, download the Gananoque Heritage Walking Tour app to explore the museum on your own.

If you have children, the 'Sara Saves' program's short educational videos on endangered species are sure to captivate them during your getaway to the Thousand Islands.
