Carmelite Church

Built in 1297, then rebuilt in 1370 after the fire at the Ville basse of Carcassonne by the Black Prince, Notre-Dame des Carmes is an emblematic church with a typically southern Languedoc Gothic style. Fairly soberly decorated: capitals adorned with foliage or histories.

There has been very few maintenance or restoration work since the end of the 19th century. The roofing and masonry have deteriorated because of the water inlets, the washing of mortars, and the aging of the stones. The coatings and interior design were damaged, even words, the structure of the buttresses was altered.

The interior of the Carmes Church consists of a single nave measuring 12.80 meters wide by 17 meters long, flanked by ten chapels.

Major restoration work has been carried out in recent years. Thanks to the donations received, the first phase of work on the restoration of the masonry, the millwork, the stained glass windows, the paintings, and the floor arches in the chapel is completed.

A second phase of work is ongoing. It aims to restore the western façade of the church, to strengthen the structure, and to touch up the framework above the gallery.
