Port-Louis Marine Cemetery

A final rest in peace, facing the sea

There is a beautiful small marine cemetery just after Souffleur Beach, in an area where there was once a slave cemetery.

Before the redevelopment of the marine cemetery in the 1960s, most of the graves were mounds of sand surrounded by conch shells or zinc sheets. The coffins themselves were made of zinc before being made of wood.
