Morne-à-l'Eau Cemetery

A Cemetery Like No Other

Morne-à-l'Eau is known in Guadeloupe for its crab festival (at Easter), but it is its cemetery that ensures its international reputation. It is recognized worldwide. In the heart of this lively town in the center of Grande-Terre, more than 1800 graves are arranged on the slopes of a splendid natural amphitheater.

The cemetery's great originality lies in the black and white checkerboard patterns that adorn the majority of the tombs, giving the whole place the appearance of a giant chessboard. The bright white predominates, with a few whimsical touches: some deceased rest under tombs of a discreet blue or pink.
