Fort Napoleon

The Museum of the History of Saintes

Fort Napoléon is located at the top of Morne Mire, where the first fort, called Fort Louis, once stood before being destroyed by the British in 1809. The construction of the new fort, named Fort Napoléon, was completed in 1867. This fort is named after Napoleon III. It never actually served as a military fortress to fight the British and never experienced a single shot fired in its direction. It was used as a penitentiary until the early 20th century, so it remains in excellent condition.

Fort Napoléon has become the museum of the history of Les Saintes and its cultural environment. It overlooks the magnificent Bay of Les Saintes from a height of 114 meters, offering an exceptional 360° view of Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Marie-Galante.
