Louis-Aubert Park

Origin of the name

This park pays tribute to Louis Aubert, a former hotelier from Sainte-Adèle.

Louis Aubert and his wife bought their first inn and moved a few years later into the building that once housed the village school, closer to Lac Rond. They converted the school building into an inn, then into a general store that the family kept for several decades.

In Louis-Aubert Park, there is a mural dedicated to Maurice Aveline, a great fishing tournament organizer.

Louis Aubert and Amanda Beaudoin

Merchant J.L. Aubert (1872-1956) closed his general store in Thetford-Mines in 1903 and headed to Sainte-Adèle with his wife Amanda Beaudoin and their children Irénée and Herménégilde.

The merchant acquired an inn located about a hundred feet from Lac Rond. In the 1908 edition of the newspaper La Presse, the Auberts invited travelers passing through to stay with them for $1.50 per day.

In 1927, the Auberts sold their old inn to Raoul Latour from the village of Lesage, who restored it and added new furniture. This building was demolished in 1929.

Construction of a school in the village

In 1900, the Sainte-Adèle School Municipality purchased land for the construction of a mixed schoolhouse. Bids were announced in December in various newspapers. Children began attending in September 1901.

The site, managed by the Sisters of Charity, was accessed through a large porch before heading to the two separate classrooms, divided by a glass partition. The mother superior could easily oversee the smooth running of the classes.

The school was later purchased by the Aubert family.

For several decades

For several decades, the members of the Aubert family have successively provided quality service to their loyal customers. Amanda passed away in 1954, followed by Joseph Louis Aubert two years later. Various restaurants occupied the space over the years. The building was completely destroyed by a fire on December 28, 2018.

The Auberts are buying the village school.

In 1927, Amanda Beaudoin and Louis Aubert purchased the mixed schoolhouse located at 181 Morin Street from the municipality of Sainte-Adèle. The notarized contract was made in the name of Amanda Beaudouin. The establishment, built in 1901, had become too small for the growing needs of the village. The school then included a large porch and two large classrooms, separated by a glass partition.

With the purchase of the school, they also became owners of the water system serving the village houses.

Evolution of the General Store

The Auberts converted the place into an inn, then expanded the building and a few years later set up a general store.

Various businesses found their place there over the years, including a Sport Expert store. Among the last owners were the restaurants Sothaï, La Bête du Nord, and La Table d’Azia.

The business was completely destroyed by a fire on December 28, 2018. In March 2021, the Sainte-Adèle dental clinic was built on the site.

Dr. Émilien Aubert, bacteriologist

Among the children of Louis Aubert and Amanda Beaudoin, Émilien specializes in bacteriology. After completing his two years in medicine at the University of Montreal in 1941, Dr. Aubert works at the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Veterans Hospital while continuing to further his education.

After a stay in Europe in 1950, Émilien Aubert goes to study at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, where he completes training two years later at the Duke University Medical Research Institute in Durham, North Carolina.
