Lyman Road

Highland Cattle Breeding Farm

Audio transcript

We are now on Lyman Road, offering a distinctive view of a working farm featuring Highland cattle. Native to Scotland, these animals are known for their resilience and adaptability to harsh climates, easily recognized by their long coats and prominent horns.

This property reflects the continued presence of agriculture in Austin, albeit in forms that differ from the traditional dairy farms that once dominated the region. The house, built circa 1890, showcases the American vernacular architectural style of the period.

Agricultural land is part of Austin’s identity and represents great value, particularly in economic, social, landscape, cultural and heritage terms.

From this vantage point, you can enjoy a unique perspective of the Appalachian range, including Mount Owl’s Head and the Abbey.

Notably, only Mount Place and Mount Chagnon lie within Austin’s 85-square-kilometre territory. Often, our look is drawn towards mountains that invited themselves into the scenery like an optical illusion.

This view illustrates how landscapes evolve across generations, shaped by both natural and human influences. The layered visual planes before you enrich our perception of the region’s dynamic and diverse terrain.
