Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu

Rich in history

The village of Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu is located along the Richelieu River, also known as the "Chemin des Patriotes" in memory of the Patriots' Rebellion (1837-1838).

Rich in history, Saint-Charles has been part of the region's toponymy since at least 1764. A transaction dating back to 1770 involving the Seigneurie of Saint-Charles bears witness to this.

In October 1837, between 4,000 and 5,000 Patriots held an important meeting there to prepare for the uprising against English rule. It was at this location that the famous Assembly of the Six Counties took place on October 23, the most significant of that year. Thirteen resolutions were adopted there.
