Union Office Building

Former North Otago Times journal

Originally, this splendid building primarily served as administrative offices and a printing house for the North Otago Times, an influential local newspaper founded in 1864.

The building was designed by architects and civil engineers Brinsley and Stewart from Oamaru. In Victorian style, it blends harmoniously with the remarkable urban landscape of the area.

Historical

This is one of the notable buildings in the Victorian district.

Since 1864

It primarily served as administrative offices and a printing house for the North Otago Times, an influential local newspaper founded in 1864. Located on Thames Street, this building made of white limestone — the famous Oamaru stone — fits perfectly into the Victorian architectural ensemble that the historic center is renowned for.

A key role in information dissemination

At the end of the 19th century, this area buzzed with commercial and administrative activities related to the port, wool and grain trade, and the city's economic dynamism.

The Oamaru Union Office later occupied the building, which played a key role in the dissemination of information and local public life.

Today

Nowadays, the building is part of a protected and preserved historic area, recognized for the exceptional value of its architectural heritage.
