Exchange Chambers

Typical of Oamaru's Victorian urban landscape

In front of us, the Exchange Chambers building in Oamaru, built around 1882, initially served as commercial offices and professional spaces in the heart of Oamaru's Victorian district. Designed by architect Thomas Glass, this limestone building housed businesses, real estate agents, and brokers, reflecting Oamaru's economic boom.

Stylish!

Designed in an Italian style by architect Thomas Forrester, this two-story building is a typical feature of the remarkable Victorian urban landscape for which the historic Harbour/Tyne Street area is renowned.

The Whitestone Civic Trust took over the building in 1989. The exterior was restored in 2001, and the office space on the first floor as well as the staircase were reinstated.

As of 2013, the building serves as an office for Tiger Lily’s and the Oamaru Textile Emporium.
