This Arts & Métiers-style multi-unit building was built in 1937. It features several characteristic elements of the style, including its central projecting bay, imposing gables piercing the roof, its faux half-timbering, and its stucco finish. The emphasis on the English countryside and the false impression of a rustic cottage are dichotomous aspects of the mining town.
Also note its asymmetrical gable roof, topped with a trio of gables on the facade, as well as its prominent chimney stacks on the main roof.
Historical Significance
There is no doubt that this building stands out due to its architectural design and its age. Despite the popularity of the Arts & Métiers-style in the town, this architectural example is unique in terms of its scale and interpretation. Built in 1937, during a period of rapid urban growth, this building possesses significant historical value.
