Granada

Granada... the suburbs just 6 km from downtown!

Take advantage of your stop in front of the church and rectory in Granada to compare the vintage aerial photo with what these two buildings look like today! The changes made to the church are obvious, but the same cannot be said for the rectory. Can you spot them?

There are several lakes in this neighborhood, the largest of which are Lac Beauchastel and Lac Bruyère. You’ll pass by the lake during your walk, as well as several others. Keep your eyes peeled!

A prominent figure!

A native of Granada who was named a Knight of the Order of Quebec in 2007, Réal Lacombe made significant contributions both as a social and health care leader, and to public health in Quebec. Concerned with the overall health of the population, he initiated several projects in this area, including the Villes et villages en santé program, which he led for more than 25 years. In 1987, Rouyn-Noranda became the very first city in Quebec to benefit from this program.

Artwork - Granada 1935

Placed next to the neighborhood’s interpretive panel, this artwork depicts a gathering of settlers and their pets, paying tribute to the tremendous work accomplished by the pioneers of Granada. Through this painting, the artist, Christian Beauchemin, sought to capture the pride these settlers felt as they posed for the photograph that inspired the work.

Artist: Christian Beauchemin

Year: 2016

Material: acrylic on UHD panel

Christian Beauchemin

With a background in multimedia and illustration, Christian Beauchemin incorporates techniques developed for his digital projects into his artistic practice, adapting them for use in painting.

For this project, using an archival photo taken during Granada’s early days, he conducted a study of the subjects and the color palette to be applied for the colorization of this black-and-white image. The result is a blend of the new and the old, depicting the subjects with free and spontaneous brushstrokes.
