Nekitotegwak Mural

Where the First Settlers Laid Down Roots

Near 222, Wellington Nord Street
Realisation: MURIRS, 2003

You are standing where the Magog and Saint-François rivers meet—a site once frequented by the Abenaki and later home to Sherbrooke’s first settlers. This mural imagines the Magog River at the time of beaver dams. In Abenaki, Nekitotegwak means “where the rivers meet.”

Drawn by rich wildlife, fish, wild fruits, and maple water, the Abenaki stopped here, portaged their canoes, and traveled up the Magog River canyon toward Lake Memphremagog.
