Tower of Tarragone's Praetorium

Tower of the Praetorium

The tower standing in front of you is one of the only remaining parts of the Praetorium, formerly the Praetor's palace, the person who ruled and administered justice, a very important monument at the time. Many hearings were held inside this building, a bit like in a courthouse today. The structure was built in the 1st century, at the same time as the forum.
You can also find an underground arched chamber inside this tower.

Back in the Middle Ages, the kings of Aragon purchased the Praetorium and turned it into a royal palace. The Prateorium's windows were then changed. They were enlarged based on the royal palace in order to let more daylight in. These windows dating from the 12th century A.D. approximately can still be seen nowadays.
