St-Viateur school

St-Viateur school

The first central school in Quebec

This is a majestic old school.

Return to the past

In 1926, the first school in the village was located in house in the village at the adress 26 rue des Pionniers, residence of M. Hill. This building is still present today, itw as converted into an apartement block and accommodated a number of tenants over time.

It was subsequently that the school board built in 1946, a central school of 6 classes in the village and establishes transport for schoolchildren from the countryside, a real innovation in the Quebec education system of the time.  It was therefore in Angliers that the fisrt central school was built.

History of the building

In 1947, Angliers St-Viateur school open his door to the 155 students. Everything is new, from the building to the furniture, students have hot chocolate at lunch time. A year later, the school board takes legal action for non-payment and the superior court appoints an administrator.

This school welcomed students from the first to the tenth garde until 1963 and to the seventh until 1972. The school board of Lac-Témiscamingue decided the close the school due to lack of students in 2010. She is now used to accommodate different municipal organizations.

It is a vast fieldstone building which includes 6 classrooms for boys and girls. Such a construction is the pride of all parishioners thanks to the unique character it exudes. She is sitting on the rock of a fairly high elevation which makes her appear taller. We did not dig a cellar and its really the ground floor which will serve as a basement.

The school is very modern. The lighting is perfect and the classrooms are very large. At the bottom, there will be the recreation room, a library and a small dining room adjoining the kitchen. Angliers St-Viateur school will be in the province of Quebec, one of the first, if not the first experience of centralization of parish education.

In 1956, an annex was built to the school for the sisters' residence and there is a pressing need for four new classes. The school is so crowded that there is even a classroom in the boiler room and panels are used as walls in the multifunctional hall which is currently used as a church.

1967

In 1967, after years of loyal service, the Grey Nuns left the institution. To replace them, three women are moving from Shawinigan: Jocelyne Boisvert, Danielle Robichaud and Ginette St-Hilaire. Denise Brodeur, Denise Bourassa, Doris Perreault and Monique Poitras complete the teaching staff.
