Maison de la culture de La Macaza

Located in the old village school, built in 1897 then rebuilt in 1926 after a fire, it presents exhibitions on the heritage of yore and artists of the region, including a Jeane Fabb collection of fire sculptures. This British multidisciplinary artist and pillar of natural art settled in La Macaza and lived in the building that she also used as a studio for over 35 years until she died in 2013.

In a more distant past, students attended Notre-Dame-du-Divin-Pasteur school and convent. A section of the building dating back to 1926 is dedicated to an exhibition about the former school, which suggests, through period furniture and objects, what a classroom may have looked like at the time. 

And what about the clauses, which are shocking, to say the least, of the contract to which a female educator was bound in 1910. In addition to being single, she should “never keep the company of men, drink wine, whiskey, or beer, or ‘style’ her hair.”

The Municipality of La Macaza is a part of the Route du Lièvre Rouge, a tourist tour developed by the Société d’histoire et de généalogie des Hautes-Laurentides.
