If you look at the American side of the Niagara River, you'll see Fort Niagara. This is a French fortification built between 1726 and 1727.
Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry, one of the King's engineers in New France, even nicknamed this impressive stone structure the 'French Castle'.
After several battles against Fort George (on the Canadian side), the Canadian and British armies captured it in 1813, then surrendered it to the Americans in 1815.

This National Historic Site of Canada was the site of one of the most important battles between the invading American and British forces, assisted by the Canadian militia, between May 25 and 27, 1813.
On May 27, American troops took possession of Fort George on the Canadian side. Liberated a week later by British and Canadian troops, this latest victory prevented American troops from taking possession of the entire Niagara Peninsula. A cairn and plaque commemorate this episode in Canadian history.
