Stanstead

When a border runs through the middle of a city...

Stanstead shares its border with the town of Derby Line in Vermont, United States. Anyone passionate about history and rich architecture will love this small town.

Founded by pioneers from New England in the 1790s, Stanstead has long been a stop for the stagecoach traveling between the cities of Quebec and Boston.

In Stanstead Plain, Dufferin Street is said to be a true 'open-air museum'. It features beautiful churches and remarkable buildings, including Stanstead College (1873), the Ursuline College (1881), and the old post office.

One of the most well-known places in Stanstead houses the Haskell Library and Opera House. This building is constructed right on the Canada-United States border. Specifically, the Opera stage is in Canada, while the audience is in the United States!
