Let's take a look at the family of Hubert Paquette who married Philomène Gravel in 1865. A merchant and innkeeper in Saint-Sauveur, he obtained a concession on Village Road and settled there with his family. After becoming a widower with 7 children to support, he married Hermeline Massie in 1883.
An influential man, he was appointed school commissioner by the Department of Public Instruction in 1887. Then, in 1893, he was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec. A farmer and beekeeper, he owned horses, pigs and chickens. In his flourishing garden, he was particularly fond of buckwheat.
