EXPLORE
The capital of the island of Menorca, Mahon (Mahón in Spanish), is renowned for its strategic port. It was here, in the waters of the Mediterranean, that a major naval battle took place between the English and the French in 1756, known as the “Battle of Menorca,” won by the French navy under Louis XV. Almost immediately retaken by the English under a historic treaty, the island of Menorca was eventually returned to Spain in 1802.
