HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The city of Carcassonne owes its fame to its double walls, featuring fifty-two towers and stretching nearly 3 km. However, the history of this site goes back much further than the fortified city itself, with roots dating back more than 2,000 years, when a Roman city already stood here.

After more than a millennium of history, the city took on a new significance and became a major seat of power during the Middle Ages. In 1082, it came under the rule of the Trencavel family, an influential dynasty of lords from southern France whose fate would become closely linked to that of Carcassonne.

The 13th century left a major mark on the city's appearance. It was fitted with new fortifications, including the construction of the outer wall and the modernization of the inner rampart, turning it into a key strategic stronghold facing the province of Aragon.

By 1659, the Roussillon region became French, and the city's power declined. Abandoned for the lower town (the Bastide), its economic activities shifted toward the cloth industry and the Canal du Midi. Left neglected, the city fell into such disrepair that an 1850 decree ordered its partial destruction!

It took the fierce determination of Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevieille and Prosper Mérimée to save this world treasure, handing its restoration over to the famous Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Following in the footsteps of this incredible epic, encountering centuries of history carved into stone from the lower town to the top of the ramparts, this tour awaits you!

Enjoy the walk!
