Between fault and forest | Rural Life

Between fault and forest | Rural Life

With your mobile device in hand, explore a geological fault and visit a boreal forest hinterland!

Although Rouyn-Noranda was only founded in 1926, its history is marked by exceptional events, and the rural neighborhoods are no exception!

Away from the strictness and oversight of the clergy, mining camps sprang up like mushrooms, as towns and villages were nonexistent at the time. It wasn't until 1936 that the Mining Villages Act brought some order to these squatter camps, built almost at random.

The Cadillac-Larder Lake Fault is a major geological structure in Quebec and Ontario. Named after the township of Cadillac where it was first observed, it explains the mining wealth of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. Stretching about 320 km, it is an area rich in gold deposits. Thanks to the mines built along this fault, several towns in the region, including Rouyn-Noranda, were founded. The neighborhoods of Cadillac and McWatters are also prime examples!
