THE BUTTERFLY OF THE CARIBBEAN

The two main islands of the archipelago, Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre, resemble a butterfly when seen on a map. They are separated by the Rivière Salée.

Most tourists stay on Grande-Terre, primarily between Pointe-à-Pitre and Saint-François, along the coast, where beaches lined with coconut palms are also the most affected by sargassum seaweed drifting in from the southeast. However, most of these beaches are regularly cleaned.
